It’s no secret that many people avoid going to the dentist because of the fear and pain they associate with the experience. However, avoiding proper dental care can be dangerous – especially if you are suffering from an abscess or any other type of oral or dental infection. This is why we have incorporated sedation dentistry techniques into our practice. We are, after all, living in the 21st century, and we want to help our patients redefine their dental and orthodontic experiences!
Some of the sedation dentistry techniques that we offer are:
- Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) with local anesthetics
- Conscious Sedation
- Deep Sedation
- General Anesthesia
Nitrous oxide coupled with a local anesthetic such as Novocain can prove to be a favorable combination to help those patients who suffer from mild to moderate anxiety in the face of dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is used to relax the patient while the local anesthetic is employed to numb the affected area. This type of sedation dentistry is very mild and requires less recovery time than some of the more tranquilizing methods.
Conscious sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation for the patient, while still allowing them to maintain responsive consciousness. This method of sedation dentistry is for patients who suffer from higher than normal anxiety levels and/or those patients who will be facing more intensive procedures. Conscious sedation can still produce some degrees of amnesia in certain patients.
Deep sedation is implemented for patients who have extremely high levels of anxiety associated with dental procedures. And it is also provided to patients who will be undergoing extensive and intricate procedures. Deep sedation is a method of sedation dentistry that is also used in children and other special needs patients who are unable to remain still throughout the duration of their treatments.
General anesthesia is the deepest level of sedation that we offer, and it is typically reserved for patients who are undergoing more invasive procedures such as dental surgery to remove impacted wisdom teeth.
As a family dental practice, we make it our priority to implement the very latest in tools and technologies to provide our patients with the most up-to-date and pain reducing methods of performing dental procedures. It is our goal to make our patients as comfortable as possible and eliminate the outdated concept that dentistry is synonymous with pain. By creating a positive association with the dental industry, we hope to provide the foundation for a lifetime of good dental habits.
