Techniques and technology have allowed us to approach our pediatric dentist practice from a perspective that is quite different from 15 to 20 years ago. A lot of our patients do not have the fondest memories of their first trips to the dentist, and, honestly, who can blame them? The atmosphere is filled with bright lights, unfamiliar scents and sounds and strangers who need to put their fingers into a child’s mouth – sometimes with shiny objects!

The first visit to the pediatric dentist does not have to be stressful. So during your child’s first visit, we make them comfortable and help them think of a trip to the dentist’s office as unintimidating and pleasant. When it’s possible, we:
  • allow your child to sit on their parent’s or guardian’s lap while the examination is performed
  • allow your child to freely discuss any of the anxieties or fears that they may be experiencing
Your child’s first visit to the pediatric dentist should be scheduled when he or she is around one year old. This is a time when they will likely have already experienced the eruption of at least one tooth – if not more. And it is vital at this point to ensure that their teeth and gums are as healthy as possible. Baby teeth, after all, play a crucial role in the development and growth of permanent teeth.

During naps and bedtime, milk, formulas and any other sugary liquids can gather and pool around your child’s teeth, which surrounds them with corrosive acids and makes them vulnerable to decay. Other factors such as diet and hygiene will also have a profound effect upon the development and health of your child’s teeth. A pediatric dentist can provide you with a comprehensive list of recommendations so that you can partner with us in caring for your little one’s teeth.

One of the primary concerns of the pediatric dentist is the issue of baby bottle tooth decay. This dilemma can lead to the rotting and premature loss of baby teeth, which can, as stated above, have a detrimental impact upon the growth and configuration of your child’s permanent teeth.

To prevent baby bottle decay, you should:
  • Provide your child with a bottle containing water or a pacifier if an oral device is required to get your child to sleep
  • Check for signs of decay on the inner surface (the tongue side) of your child’s teeth at least once every two weeks
