The process of restoring a cracked, decayed or damaged tooth with a crown is as follows:
- The damaged tooth is numbed and any surrounding decay and/or broken edges are removed
- The base of the tooth is re-sculpted to provide an ideal surface onto which the restoration material will be applied
- An impression is taken of the newly surfaced tooth in order to produce a customized fitted cap
- A temporary cap is fashioned to fit over the tooth while the permanent restoration tooth is being created
- Once the permanent cap is completed, the temporary cap is removed
- The new cap is placed over the sculpted tooth and then permanently cemented into place
